Child discipline is an extremely important part of successfully raising a child. It is through effective child discipline that a child learns how to be self disciplined, responsible, and confident in the world as an adult. Effective discipline is a foundational skill that all children need to learn to be successful in their adult life.

Parents, using effective discipline strategies, not only give their children a firm foundation of life skills that can be used about a children's lives, but also reap the benefits as the child grows up as part of the family. By using effective child discipline parents reduce the stress and tension within the home. Through effective child discipline children grow up enjoying the childhood and developing self-confidence and self-esteem. This is because through effectively disciplining children, children grow up feeling safe and secure.

When parenting, it is important to focus on the positive behavior of your child rather than the negative. Unfortunately some children feel that they only get attention from parents when they do something wrong in this encourage encourages bad behavior because then they get the attention they crave.

However busy you are, as a parent, it is important to spend quality time with your child every day. Parents are the primary role model for your children, and they will learn more by the way you demonstrate love for them, and by setting them a good example than by listening to what you say. In children's developmental years it's essential for parents to hug and cuddle their children and praise them when they behave well. It's important also for parents to try to understand why child may be angry or upset, as well as addressing the unacceptable behavior.

It is better if parents take a proactive approach to discourage bad conduct by giving children clear choices about what to do. For example: "Would you like to have your bath after dinner, or just before you go to bed?" Children appreciate the chance to make decisions. It is critical to make sure family rules are in place that will protect the safety, health and well-being of children, and that these are given top priority.

Effective discipline is fair and consistent. Parents lose the child's respect if a child is disciplined unfairly. Discipline that's not consistent is confusing to children, no matter how old they are. If parents are inconsistent in the way they discipline children, their children may find it hard to respect them. It can also indirectly encourage misbehaving and result in confusion and frustration for the child.

The way any discipline is implemented is an important factor in building trust and respect from the child. Parents must make sure that the punishment fits the crime and doesn't punish too severely or is too lax. The consequences of their actions should be related to their behavior.

If, as a parent, you feel you are struggling in the area of child discipline, know that you are not alone. All parents learn on the job when bringing up their children.
